There are several traditions to celebrate Christmas, such as:

Gift
This culture started to develop on 19th century based on the story of wisemen who gave gifts to Jesus. Started in North Europe as end year celebration.

Santa Claus
Santa Claus story formed from a person named Saint Nicholas, on 4th century. He's from Turkey. Saint Nicholas is popular as kids protector. He likes to give gift to everyone, specially kids. The story about Saint Nicholas in next generation become Santa Claus, It developed and became culture to celebrate Christmas. Now, Santa Claus is figured an old man who loves kids.
